Online Pharmacy Transition & Third-Party Veterinary-Specific Pharmacies
What do I need to do during this online pharmacy transition?
Keep an eye on your email inbox to set up the access for your new account. If you are not sure which email address may be associated with your current online pharmacy access, feel free to call, text or email – and we’ll help you figure that out.
What will happen to my current auto-shipments when I move to Belmont’s new online pharmacy?
We will manage any existing auto-shipments for you and ensure you’re properly set up with our new platform. You will receive an email to confirm your new online pharmacy account, set up a new password and add your payment information for future use.
What will happen to my remaining refills when Belmont moves to the new online pharmacy?
We will manage any remaining refills for you and ensure you’re properly set up with our new platform as seamlessly as possible. You will receive an email to confirm your new online pharmacy account, set up a new password and add your payment information for future use.
What is a “third-party veterinary-specific pharmacy”?
Third-party veterinary-specific pharmacies are physical or virtual pharmacies that carry veterinary-specific prescription medications and supplements for pets. Third-party veterinary-specific pharmacies include but are not limited to Chewy, 1800PetMeds and AlliVet.
Why has Belmont Animal Hospital decided to stop working with these competitor pharmacies?
We have decided to discontinue supporting these third-party veterinary-specific pharmacies because we want to have confidence in the products your pets are receiving and that their medication is coming from someone we can trust.
Does this mean we can only fill our pet’s medications with Belmont Animal Hospital?
Nope! You can choose to work with any pharmacy you’d like. After July 31st, we will no longer have a team member dedicated to supporting any third-party veterinary-specific pharmacy requests. It will be your responsibility to manage the refills and communications independently, and without our help.
If I choose to continue filling my prescriptions through a third-party veterinary-specific pharmacy, and Belmont’s not working with them – how will I get my pet’s medications?
We are happy to provide written prescriptions for any prescription medications (that are approved by one of our doctors, of course; ) for you to pick up in person to share with any pharmacy of your choice. These written prescriptions must be picked up in person; faxing or emailing written prescriptions will not be an option. Refills may not be eligible on written prescriptions to ensure accurate medical records and proper dosing for each patient.
What if my pet is not taking a veterinary-specific medication, will I still have to pick up that written prescription in person?
No. We are still willing and able to work with third-party pharmacies for your pet’s non-veterinary-specific prescription.
What are veterinary-specific medications, and how do they differ from those compatible with humans?
Veterinary-specific medications are those that are formulated specifically for animals and are not available for use in humans. Examples of these include heartworm preventions like Heartgard Plus or Simparica Trio, flea & tick prevention like Bravecto or Nexgard. Some examples of chronic medications include Apoquel, Zenrelia and Rimadyl. Some examples of medications that are compatible with humans would include gabapentin, levothyroxine, phenobarbital, and fluoxetine.
Will Belmont Animal Hospital authorize veterinary-specific medications requests from a pharmacy that is not veterinary-specific (also carries human pharmaceuticals)?
No. We will not fill veterinary-specific medications at any pharmacy and will require a written prescription be picked up in person.
What if I would like to work with Belmont’s new pharmacy, but I still have refills with a third-party veterinary-specific pharmacy?
This is a difficult question to answer as every pharmacy has their own processes and procedures and you may have auto-shipments set up. We are happy to help you transition any existing prescriptions to our new online pharmacy as best we can.
Why should I use Belmont’s pharmacy instead of pharmacies like Costco or Chewy?
There are several reasons!
-Many of the veterinary-specific medications come with efficacy guarantees from the vendor or manufacturer. Should there be a break in efficacy, we will manage all the communications with the vendor for you and manage any covered expenses, so you don’t have to come out of pocket and wait for a refund.
-We are confident that the medications you receive from our hospital, or our online pharmacy are handled and stored properly and according to the manufacturers guidelines and you’re receiving a quality product and are willing to back that up.
-We will try to make your pet-prescription experience as convenient as possible, while providing excellent service with the utmost familiarity with your pet.
-Why wouldn’t you want to support your favorite veterinary hospital!? ; )
